Marketplace enrollment timing
Open Enrollment and Special Enrollment Periods
Use the correct official route, keep dated evidence, and confirm both plan selection and coverage activation.
| Route | When it applies | Evidence to keep |
|---|---|---|
| Open Enrollment | The annual period for selecting individual Marketplace coverage; dates and state processes should be checked on the official Marketplace | Plan-year dates, application, plan selection, first-payment instructions |
| Special Enrollment Period | Outside the annual window when an applicant qualifies through a recognized life event or circumstance | Eligibility notice, event date, requested supporting documents, selection deadline |
| Medicaid or CHIP | Applications are accepted throughout the year for people who may qualify | State notice and requested verification |
| Job-based enrollment | Employer plan-year and special-enrollment rules | Benefits notice, loss-of-coverage date, employer deadlines |
Avoid a coverage gap
Build a dated enrollment record
- Identify the route. Use the Marketplace, employer, Medicaid/CHIP, or Medicare system that governs the coverage.
- Record the triggering date. For a possible Special Enrollment Period, save the event and prior-coverage dates exactly.
- Read the official notice. It controls eligibility, requested evidence, and next actions.
- Compare live plans. Check coverage start dates, providers, drugs, total cost, and plan documents.
- Complete payment steps. Plan selection and premium payment can be separate; follow the official instructions.
- Confirm activation. Keep confirmation from the Marketplace and insurer before assuming coverage is active.
COBRA and Marketplace timing can interact
COBRA can continue certain job-based coverage after qualifying events, often with the individual paying more of the premium. A Marketplace Special Enrollment Period may also be available after losing job-based coverage. Choosing, ending, or exhausting COBRA can affect timing, so compare official notices, plan costs, provider continuity, and deadlines before acting.
